Notes from the Wormhole

Happy New Year! Eleven months and twenty days until the end of the world if you believe all that end-of-the-Mayan-calendar stuff, which I (mostly) don't.

I do wonder, however, if so much collective mental energy focused on a particular date -- December 21, 2012, in this case -- might cause SOMETHING to happen, a concept suggested in a recent episode of Morgan Freeman's Through the Wormhole. Hmmm...

But apocalyptic musings aside and speaking of wormholes, I do feel like I enter a portal in the time/space continuum every December 24 and do not emerge until January 3 or so -- the day, coincidentally, when school re-opens after Christmas break!

Time in the wormhole is warped, but nice. I may not be able to keep track of which day of the week it is, but there's lots of family time and good food; exchanging gifts with people and then exchanging gifts for people, be they broken or just wrong. This year there was major room-cleaning for a couple of members of this household, and that gave a productive air to the otherwise lost week between Christmas and New Year.

I have no big resolutions for this year, more a renewed commitment to some ongoing goals. And in a New Year's Eve move that I think any crocheter or knitter would appreciate, yesterday I pulled out and organized my small stash of yarn, planning projects and relegating some to the "scrap blanket" pile. I never did get to finish the second socks on any of the three pairs I'm knitting, but I don't think anybody's feet are going anywhere for a while -- at least not until December 21, anyway!
